The Nukini

Feeling with your heart: in a small part of the forest, the people of the Jaguar are reborn.

The Nukini people revere the jaguar as a powerful symbol of strength, wisdom, and protection. They are often referred to as the “People of the Jaguar” because the jaguar plays a central role in their cosmology and cultural identity. For the Nukini, the jaguar embodies the spirit of the forest and serves as a guide in their spiritual journeys and ceremonies.

The Impact of Rubber Tappers

In Acre, with the arrival of the rubber tappers, indigenous peoples experienced significant changes. Many traditions were abandoned as outside influences nearly eradicated several indigenous groups.

The Rebirth of the Nukini People

On the upper Moa River, near the Serra do Divisor National Park in Mâncio Lima, 17 indigenous families from the Nukini ethnic group are undergoing a revival. Under the leadership of Chief Xiti Inukunui, the community is working hard to restore their culture.

Reviving Ancient Traditions

Chief Xiti Inukunui is determined to organize the community and strengthen the Nukini culture. The revival efforts include traditional practices such as language, dance, spirituality, and the creation of beautiful handicrafts like bracelets, earrings, and headdresses.

Forest Medicines and Spiritual Practices

The Nukini people deeply value the natural medicines of the forest. These include various types of rapé, sananga (a natural eye drop for spiritual clarity), sacred herb baths, sipá (natural incense), caiçuma (a fermented drink), and ayahuasca, all integral parts of their culture. These elements reflect the Nukini’s appreciation for their heritage as the “People of the Jaguar.”

Sustainable Living and Community Sharing

In Recanto Verde village, the community shares resources such as solar energy and water. Everything grown is shared, and daily reforestation efforts are made to ensure future generations can also benefit from the forest’s bounty. The villagers, filled with joy and willingness, carry out their work with smiles on their faces.

A Personal Journey

Over the course of six intense days in the village, I experienced life alongside the Nukini people. From preparing caiçuma and bathing in clay to taking part in spiritual ceremonies at the kupichawa (spiritual center), I was immersed in their way of life. These experiences were deeply transformative, from participating in ayahuasca ceremonies to receiving protective tattoos.

Leadership and Cultural Restoration

Chief Xiti Inukunui, a forward-thinking warrior, is leading the successful revival of his people’s culture. His dedication to preserving and strengthening the Nukini way of life is inspiring.

A Reflection on Simplicity and Beauty

This journey has taught me that simplicity and beauty are closely intertwined. I am deeply grateful for this moment and for the lessons the universe has provided.
