Traditional Dosing of Rapé

When Brazilians take their rapé it first always lands on their hand. Generally, all Brazilian Indians, caboclos, and other rapé users I have met in the 10 years I visited this intense and beautiful country take their bottle of rapé and then put an amount of snuff on their hand. They flatten the rapé with the tip of their tepi and divide it into equal portions. One for each nostril.

When the rapé rests on the hand it’s the moment of affirming prayer and intention. After this one dosage is scooped from the hand into the tepi. After the second application, the hand is blown and other leftovers are wiped away from the hand.

The invention of the Dosador/Rapé Dosage Scoop

When I first came in contact with rapé a friend of mine was using a little bamboo stick to prepare the snuff application. To me, this seemed a very simple and clean way to work. When I asked my friend where the idea to do it like this originated from he told me a little story. My friend Marco was in the forest of Acre with his caboclo shaman teacher and friend Antonio. When they were about to apply rapé Francisco took his knife and within a few minutes, he made a simple dosage scoop from a small wooden stick. When my friend Marco asked Antonio what to call it he said, “It’s a dosador”. This story that my friend Marco shared with me took place 18 years ago.
